Abstract

The main objectives of this study is to find out the infant feeding practices of the mothers in lowland and upland area. Specifically it aims to: 1. To find out the infant feeding practices of lowland and upland mothers. 2. To find out the relationship between the kind of infant feeding practices with the health of the child. 3. To identify and compare the beliefs and tradition of the lowland and upland mothers regarding infant feeding. Based on the data gathered the infant feeding practices used by mothers in lowland and upland area in Cavite are breastfeeding, bottlefeeding than the bottlefeeding method. Knowing that all mothers using breastfeeding are also feedinf the infant with colostrum which is important to a new born baby. In bottlefeeding the most common milk formula used is S26, Enfamil and Pelargon and with others unspecified. But there are still some mothers practicing the mixed feeding since the mothers is also working. Milk is not enough to the ingant grow. They need a supplementary feeding to continued proper growth. Mothers in lowland area usually give canned milk while mothers in upland area usually give "Am". Mothers in lowland area started giving mash potato, half cooked egg, mash carrot at the age of 4 months. While mothers in upland areas started giving this kind of food at the age of 6 months. But mothers who do not have time to follow up their supplemenatry feeding for their baby, they always do to give pure vitamins. Most of the mothers in lowland and upland areas says that their child are not always get sick. Mothers in lowland area they say that the child must go to the doctor if they have sick while in upland area they say that the child must go to the health center if they have sick. According to the beliefs and traditions all mothers in lowland and upland area they believe that mothers milk is the best for baby because it is pure and very nutritious. It helps the baby yo grow stronger, healthier and gives greater resistance against diseases. Most of all, they believe that mother and baby will become closer to each other.   We therefore conclude that the proper nourishment of an infant is due to proper feeding. The popular feeding practices of mothers in lowland and upland areas in Cavite are breastfeeding and bottle-feeding but few are using mixed feeding.
