Abstract
High cost of ancillary procedures has been a common complaint by patients presenting with shoulder pain. The study aims to provide data regarding diagnostic abilities of different imaging modalities (x-ray and ultrasound) that may be utilized in the formation of a cost effective protocol in the evaluation of shoulder pain. The study also aims to provide baseline data that would benefit clinicians by presenting evidence-based information on alternative modalities that can be used in the diagnosis of shoulder pathologies. This study was conducted at the Radiology Department at De La Salle University Medical Center, a 250-bed tertiary hospital located in Dasmariñas City, Cavite. A total enumeration of patients who were eligible and underwent unilateral or bilateral shoulder ultrasonography and radiography at DLSUMC within the study period (August 2013 to August 2015) was included in the study. This study concluded that most of the radiographic findings among patients with shoulder pain of De La Salle University Medical Center were not in agreement or significantly difference from their ultrasound findings. Pathologies involving shoulder tendons, muscles, joint capsule and bursa were the most commons ultrasound findings missed using x-ray among subjects with shoulder pain.
