Abstract
In the pediatric age group, ovarian torsion is an infrequent diagnosis. Pathophysiological consequences include ovarian loss, intra-abdominal infection, sepsis, and death. Furthermore, ovarian torsion signifies a true surgical emergency. Prompt diagnosis is important to ovarian salvage, and high clinical suspicion is essential. Confounding the diagnosis in general are more commonly encountered abdominal complaints in the Emergency Room (ER) such as functional constipation, acute gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections and more common surgical emergencies such as appendicitis. Prompt diagnosis can be further complicated in low-risk populations such as young children. This is a report on a patient who had an abdominal pain that was managed as a case of acute appendicitis with urinary tract infection probable and was eventually found out to have ovarian torsion upon operation.
