Acute leukemia among pediatric patients admitted in the De La Salle University Medical Center from January 2002-December 2012

Abstract

This is a descriptive study cross-sectional research design. Charts of children diagnosed with acute leukemia was done. Charts were reviewed using EPI information for collection and interpretation. Acute lymphocytic leukemia has a ratio of 1:4 compared to AML, ALL occurs in ages 2-8 years, with male ponderance. The common chief complaints were fever, pallor, body malaise and limping. Most of the patients were from Dasmarinas Cavite, Roman Catholics and were admitted under the pay category. Diagnosis were confirmed using histopathologic examination of bone marrow aspirate, FAB and immunophenotyping. Acute leukemic patients wit anemia, leukopenia wit predominate of neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hypochromia, anisocytosis and poikilocytosis. Most of the patients presented with nonspecific central pneumonitis and all had no blast cells seen on initial CSF examination. Only 53% of patients diagnosed with acute leukemia underwent chemotherapy.
