Abstract

Meta-analysis was used. RCTs from PubMed, EMBASE, Science Direct and Cochrane Central Library were searched from January 2012 to April 2020. After through assessment of relevant studies, four eligible RCTs published between January 2012 to April 2020, representing 154 participants were included. Analytic approach and software provided by Cochrane Collaboration was used for analyses and was interpreted using forest plot. N-acetylcysteine is an accessible, relatively cheap and easily administered alternative treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder who are not responding optimally to current therapeutic intervention. This study revealed significant improvements in irritability and hyperactivity/noncompliance behaviors while decrease in stereotypic, inappropriate speech and lethargy/social withdrawal behaviors were observed but of less significance. Thus, potential role of NAC in the early management of ASD should be further investigated to possible prevent progression of severe aberrant behaviors in children.
