Abstract
Ultrasound, in conjunction with fine needle aspiration biopsy, plays an essential role in the diagnosis of thyroid pathologies. A retrospective study was done in our institution to provide data regarding the cytopathologic classification of thyroid nodules based on the Bethesda system. Fifty five patients with thyroid nodules were included in this study and ultrasound-guided NAB was performed general surgery consultants and/or residents. Specimen obtained were subjected to cytopathologic analysis. Thirty two patients (58.1%) were noted to have benign thyroid nodule biopsy, fourteen (25.5%) had non-diagnostic cytologic finding, four patients (4%) had FLUS or AUS. Both follicular neoplasm and nodules suspicious for malignancy were each noted in two patients (3.6%), respectively. Only one patient had malignancy. Of the 55 subjects, only seven patients underwent surgery. Final histopathologic reports were compared to ultrasound-guided FNAB results which revealed 85.71% diagnostic accuracy for detecting thyroid pathologies with sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 83.33% respectively. Ultrasound-guided FNAB is both cost-effective and time-saving, thus, highly recommend in evaluating thyroid nodules.
