A case of squamous cell carcinoma in-situ of the breast : a case report

Abstract

A 54 year-old female presented with erythematous, pea-sized plaque on the right breast with associated pruritus of 8 years duration. Interval history showed gradual increase in size of the lesion to about 5cm encroaching the entire nipple. Consult was done at a rural health center where it was initially diagnosed as fungal infection and prescribed with unrecalled medication. Squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the breast is a rare disease entity. Because it clinically resembles Paget's disease, confirmatory test such as punch biopsy of the lesion with appropriate immunohistochemical staining is highly recommended. Squamous cell carcinoma in situ should always be included in the differential diagnosis of breast lesions especially in the nipple-areolar complex.
