Abstract
A total of 164 postpartum mothers were included in the study. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) a 10-item questionnaire for screening postpartum women was used in this study. A validated version of EPDS among Filipino women was adopted in the study. Out of 164 respondents, 35 had postpartum depression corresponding to 21.3%. Among the 129 who were non-PPD patients, 3 were identified to have score of at least 1 point in question #10 which suggest suicidal ideation (SI Group). Respondents who scored < 10 in EPDS, majority were exclusively breastfeeding (57%) compared to only around a quarter (26%) of those in the ≥10 EPDS Group and a third in the SI Group. For the < 10 EPDS group, the most common problems encountered with initiation of breastfeeding were physical difficulty (49%) followed by pain (32%) and inconvenience (13%). For the ≥10 EPDS Group the most common problems was also physical difficulty (80%) followed by pain (51%), and medical reasons (23%).
