Case report : Acute promyelocytic leukemia in pregnancy

Abstract

A 32 year-old G4P3 (3003) Filipina on her 25-26th week of pregnancy, was diagnosed with APL, after admission due to echymmosses, easy bruisability, gingival bleeding and fever. Complete blood count showed anemia, thrombosytopenia, atypical lymphocytes, myelocytes and metamyelocytes. Shw was given blood transfusion and fetal status was monitored. Bone aspiration was submitted for flow cytometry, where abnormal promyelocytes was seen. Patient positively tested for the PML-RAR fusion gene via fluorescent in situ hybridization. patient was started on ATRA and did not develop complications. Patient continued medications on out-patient and she gave birth at term to a normal baby girl.
