Abstract
The study population will consist of all patients who underwent POEM in De La Salle University Medical Center from January 2014 to December 2016. Patients with primary achalasia diagnosed using EGD and barium swallow were included in the study. POEM was performed under general anesthesia in 11 patients, 5 males and 6 females with mean age of 29 years old. Two patients underwent previous balloon dilatation, two patients had previous botox injection and the rest has no previous treatment for achalasia prior to POEM. Mean Eckardt score pre POEM was 7. Mean total myotomy length, gastric myotomy and esophageal myotomy were 9cm, 2.6 cm and 6.4 cm respectively. The ,eam procedure time was 98 minutes and the procedure-related cpnoperitoneum was 36% (4/11). The average endoscopic clips used were 8. Treatment success (Eckardt score ≤3) was achieved in 100% of all patients (Mean post POEM Eckardt score of 1), with mean hospital stay of 5 days and noted of no retention of dye adter barium swallow on all patients. No patient required proton-pump inhibitors or antacids after POEM. POEM is an effective and safe treatment for patients diagnosed with achalasia resulting in short-term relief in 100% of subjects.
