Abstract

Purple Urine Bag Syndrome (PUBS) is a rare occurrence characterized by purple discoloration of urine in the plastic urine bag and tubing of patients with indwelling Foley catheters (IFC). It is generally described as a "benign condition". However, it has been shown to be related to Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), prolonged immobilization, older age, constipation and other illnesses. Two cases of Purple Urine Bag Syndrome admitted at DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER (DLSUMC) are discussed. The clinical features of the two cases are described and compared. The clinical relevance of PUBS will be discussed such that describing this condition as a "benign condition" should instead be given importance. The "Vanishing Purple" is a suggested new terminology for the characteristic vanishing of the purple color urine once it leaves the plastic urine bag.
