Abstract

Mental health is part of the holistic health of a person. A mentally healthy community brings prosperity and security. This encouraged pursuit of a mental health project in a rural community in Barangay Abay, Maasin, Iloilo.

The project aimed to assess and enhance the mental health awareness of the residents. The project is divided into three phases: the assessment phase, to know the level of awareness on mental health of residents through a questionnaire and focus group discussion, planning phase and intervention phase. Assessment showed that the knowledge, attitude, behavior, and perceptions of the residents toward mental health issues are vague and limited. Significant interventions include a mental health talk in which effectiveness was measured with pre- and post-test scores. The scores revealed improvement of their understanding of mental health. Focus group discussions also substantiated this. The community was also assisted through the development of a community-based mental health program with already notable accomplishments- the drafting of the Barangay resolution supporting the plan and the approval certificate from the Municipal Health Office regarding a training program to be conducted.

The project was then endorsed to the community, along with a sustainability plan that also included continuous awareness campaign, referral system, as well as monitoring and evaluation. On your MHARC is a gateway in cultivating the mental health awareness of the community and could expand to the municipality.
