Abstract

Recent years have showed that the mental health of employees is linked with overall company productivity since poor mental health condition can contribute to a variety of illnesses that impede the performance of an employee. Republic Act (RA) 11058, the Occupational Safety and Health Standards Act and RA 11036, Mental Health Act mandate the development and implementation of mental health policies in the workplace.

This project was deployed in Primer Group of Companies specifically in its Retail Department which is highly stressful due to a fast paced work condition. The main goal of this project is to address mental health issues in the corporate setting and mental health literacy, as well as amend the existing mental health policy to fit the company’s culture.

To assess the level of stress in the given work place a Work Stress questionnaire supplemented with Occupational Health Clinic and Human Resource Department (HRD) records review were done. With the derived data the researcher conceived the A.R. T. concept, which was implemented thereafter. The concept consists of an awareness program to increase mental health literacy of the employees; referral system with third party involvement for referral of employees that suffer from clinical mental health conditions; and a training program to key HRD personnel as Mental Health Frontliners to assist the clinic and determine employees that are mentally strained assessed through focus group discussions.

Turnover of the project to HRD was done with the approved amendment of the Mental Health policy. The Researcher, as the occupational health physician of the company, continues to have a supervisory role to the program.
