Abstract
This study used internal and external factors to determine the effect of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) on dengue prevention amongst Grade 11 Senior High School students in the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). It was done by comparing those who had exposure to dengue before and after. They tried to determine the gaps and factors that may be used as basis of more effective interventions on school based health. The quantitative design was the cross-sectional one. One hundred and twenty Grade 11 students were involved in a structured questionnaire to determine their knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices. The findings revealed that the respondents were fairly informed in symptoms, transmission, and prevention of dengue, but there were some gaps in technical information about the mosquitoes, such as longevity and range of flight and biting practices. There were positive attitudes, particularly regarding the acceptance of community responsibility; poor risk perception on personal basis. Prevention was generally undertaken such as keeping the house clean and water jars covered, but the use of biological control was not prevalent. Statistical tests revealed that there were no significant differences in KAP between students who had the experience of dengue and those who had not, but those with the experience displayed a bit of greater preventive behaviors. The findings highlight the importance of health education in schools and trusted sources of information, including parents, teachers, and online media, in dengue prevention. These results can be used to come up with health education campaigns that would empower students to become effective health promoters in their homes and communities a critical factor in dengue prone locales like Dasmariñas, Cavite.
