Abstract

This study, “Understanding Experiences and School Engagement of Special Health Sciences Senior High School Student Athletes,” investigated how senior high school student-athletes balance academics and athletics. Using a qualitative design and narrative analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six varsity student-athletes from different sports. The data of responses were collected and analyzed to identify key patterns. Findings revealed six major themes: family sacrifice as motivation, peer and teacher support, training impact, motivation trajectory, emotional struggles, and extracurricular roles. Results showed that family support and personal goals drive persistence, while peer and teacher guidance help during academic challenges. Training schedules had varying effects, with heavier loads requiring stricter time management and discipline. Motivation fluctuated based on emotions, athletic performance, and academic setbacks, highlighting the importance of coping strategies and emotional regulation. The study concluded that student-athletes’ engagement is shaped by personal motivation, social support, and school environment, and recommends flexible academic assistance, tutoring, and mental health resources to support their overall success.
