Abstract

The practice of Clean As You Go (CLAYGO) is a widely known procedure in which individuals take responsibility for cleaning their used spaces and surroundings. In light of this, the Special Health Senior High School (SHSSHS) students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) are expected to adhere to it more strictly, given that it is a medical institution. However, there is a gap in knowledge concerning SHSSHS students and their adherence to CLAYGO, particularly within DLSMHSI. Therefore, to address this, the study aimed to determine the perceptions and levels of adherence of students to the practice of CLAYGO in terms of awareness, consistency, active participation, and impact assessment. The methods utilized in gathering data followed an explanatory sequential design, wherein quantitative data were obtained first through an online survey followed by the qualitative data gathered through an online interview to further assess and analyze the acquired quantitative data. Findings revealed that the SHSSHS students of DLSMHSI demonstrate a generally high level of awareness and consistency in adhering to the CLAYGO policy. However, active participation yielded an average result, indicating that while students understand and practice CLAYGO, their engagement varies depending on circumstances such as time, workload, and peer influence. Qualitative responses further supported that most students recognize the importance of CLAYGO in promoting cleanliness and discipline, yet external factors like insufficient monitoring and lack of collective accountability affect the consistency of participation. The study concludes that while CLAYGO is widely recognized and valued by the students, its long-term effectiveness relies on consistent enforcement and continuous reinforcement of responsibility among the student body. Encouraging shared commitment and institutional support helps enhance adherence and instill CLAYGO as a lasting culture of cleanliness within the school community.
