Abstract
Utang na loob is a core Filipino trait where the community harmonizes through virtuous acts, reflecting how Filipinos prioritize relationships over individualism. This led to the development of the study, which aims to explore the levels and variations of utang na loob across Generations X, Y, Z, and Alpha, as well as its cultural value in daily functions and distinct meaning across generations. The explanatory sequential design was used to allow the quantitative results to be tackled in depth. Data was collected from the province of Cavite, Philippines from a sample size of 370: 51 from Generation Alpha; 203 from Generation Z; 66 from Generation Y; and 50 from Generation X. Additionally, 4 interviewees were selected, 1 representing each generation. The results indicate that it is strongly upheld by Generation Y, followed by Generations X, Z, Alpha respectively, suggesting that utang na loob remains a cherished cultural trait among Filipinos. For Generation X and Y, it is viewed as a moral duty rooted in familial responsibility, while Generation Z and Alpha perceive it as a balance between obligation and personal boundaries. This reflects an evolving interpretation of the cultural value, whereby ideas merge with modern principles, making it an evolving aspect of Filipino culture. The findings suggest an evolving value as social cohesion, which positively affected its reinterpretation. Thus, Filipinos are encouraged to understand utang na loob as a sincere expression of gratitude that fosters reciprocity and strengthens relationships, rather than a tool for manipulation.
