Abstract

This research paper investigated the emotional well-being of Grade 11 students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute for the academic year 2023-2024 who were raised by a single parent. This aimed to understand the long-term and short-term experiences caused by living with a single parent, leading to the elements of connection, trust, and relationships between the parent and the child. Examining the factors of self-concept, family relationships, and coping mechanisms provides insights into key strengths and gaps of the perspectives of emotional well-being, setting a foundation to understand the causes and consequences of having a single parent on the emotional well-being of Grade 11 students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute. This is to give an idea of how to promote and develop emotional well-being. Using surveys, questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions, we gather nine respondents from each section at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute to share their experiences and perspectives on how it impacts their emotional well-being and whether the duration of having a single parent impacts them most. Thematic analysis was used to organize and analyze the data, identifying common themes such as family relationships, coping mechanisms, and self-concept. Expressing different emotions, seeking support, and reflecting were used to cope. This study offers existing knowledge and future research to support the development of the children living with a single parent.
