Abstract

This study investigated the effects of living away from home on the academic performance of Grade 11 students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) for the academic year 2023–2024. This research used a qualitative phenomenological approach, examining the experiences of students living independently in dormitories, focusing on their challenges, coping mechanisms, and academic outcomes. In accordance with the Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017), the study explored how autonomy, competence, and relatedness influence students' adaptation to independent living and academic success. The study used online interviews and open-ended questionnaires, and identified nine themes, including independence, adaptability, personal growth, social connections, and academic performance. Findings showed that students face difficulties such as homesickness, time management issues, and stress during their first few months of adjustment, which challenged them both academically and personally. However, over time, they develop independence, self-reliance, and effective coping strategies, positively influencing their academic performance and themselves. Support from peers, school resources, and the use of collaborative learning practices proved to be very important for academic success. The study highlights the pros and cons of living away from home: while it may have challenges during the transition, it also gives opportunities for personal growth and academic improvement. These findings are important for educators, parents, and policymakers in designing ways to support students going through independent living. The findings emphasize the need for more support systems to improve students' well-being and academic outcomes during this phase where the students are new to their environment, not just in class but in their daily lives as well.
