Abstract
With the increasing number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that leave the country every year to provide for their family, the number of students who are left behind is also heightened. Parental involvement among OFW families is one of the aspects that should be observed in order to ensure the well-being of children whose parents are away. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of Senior High School students in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute whose parents are OFWs, examining their perspectives, challenges and developed coping mechanisms to battle the struggles caused by their parents' absence in relation to their academic life. The study analyzed the different perspectives of students using semi-structured qualitative interviews with three Senior High School Students in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, one Grade 11 and two Grade 12 students. The findings revealed that the parental absence of OFW parents significantly contributes to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the students. Emerging themes such as fear of abandonment, longing for parental presence, and sense of loneliness highlights the emotional burden imposed by the process of separation. In spite of these challenges, students were found to be resilient and view sustained communication, through digital means, as the key reason behind the motivation in pursuing their studies. Students spoke of a deep feeling of duty to their parents' self-sacrifice, which in turn, gave rise to a high fear of failure and a rigid dedication to academic excellence. Ultimately, the study shows the complex finding of association between emotional resilience and academic motivation in OFW parent population students. It's through the coping mechanisms developed by the students that they are able to maintain academic resilience whilst going through emotional adjustments, highlighting the importance of other family members' presence and other social support networks.
