Abstract

This study investigated cadmium levels in rice (Oryza sativa) grainsfromtwo farms: one in an urban area in Dasmariñas, Cavite, and another inarural area in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija, to assess potential cadmium contaminationlinkedtosoil and crop conditions and to address the lack of data on cadmiumlevelsinricecultivated in the Philippines' contrasting urban and rural settings. Employingacomparative research design, this study aimed to identify and compare cadmiumconcentrations in rice from both locations and evaluate their safetyfor consumption. Soil and rice samples, collected in triplicates fromboth theurbanand rural farms, were processed and analyzed using Atomic AbsorptionSpectrometry (AAS) at F.A.S.T. Laboratories. Results indicated that cadmiumlevels in both rice and soil samples from both sites were below the detectionlimitsof the laboratory (0.02 μg/g for rice and 0.05 μg/g for soil), meeting foodsafetystandards. The absence of risk factors to the contamination of cadmium, suchasmining sites, adjacent heavy roads, and industrial activity near both farms, theirrigation systems used, and the way by which rice uptakes cadmiumwereall identified as factors that account for the low levels of cadmiumacross all samples. The study concluded that neither location posed significant cadmiumcontamination risks to rice, indicating that the soil condition variations betweenthetwo sites did not significantly impact cadmium levels in rice crops.
