Abstract

This paper aimed to provide knowledge about the parenting experiences of different generations residing in slums in South Cavite. It delves into the complexities, perspectives, and diverse expressions of parenting, including navigating childhood behaviors that have negatively impacted the parent-child relationship (Smart & Lodge, 2023). In terms of literature and societal discussions, the parental experiences of those in poverty-ridden areas in the Philippines are scarcely addressed, a gap of knowledge that this paper aimed to alleviate. The researchers utilized a QualitativeNarrative approach, interviewing a total of four parents, ranging from 23 to 77 years old, across different generations residing in South Cavite, Philippines. The study revealed that each generation has distinct parenting experiences. Aligned with existing studies, the participants concluded that parents from different generations developed parenting approaches unique to their cohort as a result of varying external factors. For instance, their parenting behaviors were shaped by their experiences during their formative to adolescent years. Ultimately, behavior patterns and common factors among all the participants helped prove that parental experiences can also be a universal experience characterized by moments of compassion, a sense of duty and responsibility, and a desire to raise good citizens.
