Abstract

The history of traditional herbs and synthetic medicines were part of humanity over time. Thus, the study compares perception and preferences among non-health allied senior high school students in Cavite, prioritizing on trustworthiness, overall health care appeals for needs, efficacy, safety and reliability and identifies the preferences. The purpose of this study is to determine the similarities and differences of Traditional herbs and Synthetic Medicine based on the perceptions and preferences of the Senior High School students. A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted among non-health allied senior high school students in the Province of Cavite, through disseminating online surveys of adapted and self-made questions for interview. Thematic analysis was utilized in analyzing the qualitative part and statistical treatment of T-test was used to determine if there significant difference in overall perceptions. The results showed that traditional herbs and synthetic medicines were found to be trustworthy and appealing. Synthetic medicines were preferred for efficacy and safety, as traditional herbs were better for minimal side effects. As synthetic medicines were reliable for quality control. There is no significant difference over-all perceptions and there significant difference in trustworthiness, overall health care appeal and efficacy. In qualitative, the preferences were side effects, prescription, cultural perspectives, reliability, effectivity, and healthful practices. Overall, senior high school students utilize traditional herbs and synthetic medicines for trustworthiness and overall appeal, as they are both efficient, safe and reliable for use and there is significant difference and preferred medicine and no significant difference in overall perceptions.
