Abstract

This study highlights the significance of life and the importance of preserving it through practices like first aid, mainly focusing on wound care. It emphasizes the necessity for individuals, especially senior high school students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, to possess the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies. Thus, this research assessed the relation between the student’s level of knowledge on basic wound care procedures in terms of closed wounds, minor wounds, major wounds, and burns, alongside their physical, emotional, and mental readiness. Using a quantitative cross-sectional-predictive research design, the researchers conducted a questionnaire to Grade 12 students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (N = 192). The results showed that while the students exhibit high levels of theoretical knowledge in basic wound care procedures, there is no significant relationship between this knowledge and their physical, emotional, and mental readiness in basic wound care situations. Despite the students’ knowledge of wound care procedures, they might not be physically, mentally, and or emotionally ready as they are still in the process of learning and have less practical experiences.
