Abstract

Disbeliefs are core beliefs formed during childhood experiences that impact how individuals interact with the world. This influences decisions and endeavors that greatly affect interpersonal, emotional, and personal lives. This study aimed to understand how Disbelief affects the life of Filipino late adolescents, explaining the phenomenon of how Disbelief directly imposes a threat to one’s Quality of Life (QoL) across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains. Utilizing an explanatory sequential design with a regression model and narrative analysis, 217 late adolescents from across the Philippines participated in this study. Results showed a significant negative relationship between Disbelief and one’s QoL. The findings indicate that Disbelief significantly affects all four domains of QoL, and it affects an individual’s psychological QoL the most. The research reveals the significant negative impact of Disbelief on Filipino late adolescents' psychological health and overall QoL. Furthermore, precipitating and perpetuating factors were operationalized in building repetitive negative thinking that led to the onset of psychological distress. Findings show that Disbelief originates from negative interpersonal interactions at an early age, further contextualized by society’s inclination to value academic performance in late adolescents. The study observed that Filipino late adolescents often tied academic performance to self-worth and selfperceptions of competence. Negative thoughts and behaviors may also perpetuate Disbelief, whilst specific coping mechanisms may mitigate or maintain the level of one’s Disbelief. Exploring the nuances of Disbelief will contribute to a holistic understanding of human behavior, potentially leading to personal growth and fostering constructive relationships.
