Abstract

Adolescence is characterized by significant biological, social, and psychological changes, with recent developments extending the age range from 12 up to 25 years of age. Adolescents face various mental health difficulties due to hormonal changes, brain development, and social pressures. This consequently highlights adolescents' tendency to seek help for their issues. Parents, as crucial influencers of adolescents' development, play a potentially vital role in shaping their help-seeking attitudes. Hence, this study aimed to explore the relationship between parental involvement and adolescents’ willingness to seek help for mental issues. Explanatory sequential, cross-sectional, thematic analysis, and phenomenological research designs were utilized in this mixed method study. 200 participants from De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, aged 15 to 18, were selected through random quota sampling and systematic random sampling. To collect the data, an online survey through Google Forms and interviews were conducted with questions focusing on their perceptions regarding the relationship of parental involvement and help-seeking attitude of adolescents. The Mental Help Seeking Attitudes Scale (MHSAS), a 9-item instrument to measure attitudes towards seeking help from a mental health professional, and Maternal and Paternal Involvement, a survey used to evaluate the relationship between adolescents and their parents, were utilized as research instruments. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and linear regression. The findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between parental involvement and the help-seeking attitude of adolescents; various factors such as cultural disparity, neutrality, and autonomy all contribute to the perspectives of the participants regarding help-seeking and parental involvement.
