Abstract
The Philippine healthcare system faces challenges which notably include a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, trained to cater to the deaf population, thus leading to limited healthcare services. Quality healthcare is crucial for national development, but communication barriers pose significant obstacles, especially for deaf children. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of healthcare for deaf children from their parents’ perspective. Specifically, it sought to understand their healthcare experiences, to identify factors contributing to disparities, and to assess the impact of healthcare quality on their health outcomes and overall well-being. Previous studies have underscored the psychological challenges faced by deaf children due to communication barriers and community exclusion. Despite global efforts to address hearing loss, access to healthcare remained challenging for deaf individuals worldwide due to communication barriers and lack of cultural competence among healthcare providers. With the use of descriptive phenomenological qualitative approach, this study explored the lived experiences of deaf children attending the Philippine School for the Deaf in Pasay City, Metro Manila and based from the testimonials of their parents. Initial findings suggested a need for comprehensive reforms in the Philippine healthcare system to address the unique needs of Filipino deaf children. Findings suggested effective interventions, including fortified government programs, increased awareness in hospitals, supportive efforts from schools, and parental measures which are crucial for improving healthcare access and quality. Collaborative efforts among these institutions have also been found to be essential to ensure better health outcomes and holistic well-being of deaf children in the Philippines.
