Abstract

This research studied how internet-induced self-discrepancy affected body image perception among Filipino adolescents aged 16 to 19. It aimed to explore the relationship between internet use and self-discrepancy, and its impact on body image. The study also highlighted the effect it has on the participants’ self-esteem, self-awareness, and mental health. Conducted at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, the research used a quantitative approach with a correlational design and a closed-ended questionnaire as the research instrument. Results showed low levels of body satisfaction among the participants, suggesting a need for interventions to improve overall body appreciation. Social media engagement was shown to have a strong influence on body image perceptions, with more engagement resulting in greater self-discrepancy. In conclusion, it highlighted the relationship between internet use, self-discrepancy, and body image among Filipino adolescents, providing insights for future research and intervention strategies. Recommendations included exploring methods to change self-perception, studying factors affecting internet use effects, and understanding how social media and technology overall impact body image.
