Abstract

Teacher’s academic burnout is a phenomenon in which educators experience physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion due to prolonged stress related to their teaching responsibilities. It bears resemblances to the academic burnout experienced by students yet is distinctly suited to the challenges encountered by teachers in their professional responsibilities. The profession of teaching is one of the occupations with a high risk of academic burnout due to high academic demands, heavy workloads, administrative tasks, student-related challenges, and continuous development. This study focused on the Coping Mechanisms of a DLSMHSI SHSSHS teacher who overcame and handled the academic burnout which was developed from the work environment. The researchers used the case study method and the purposive sampling method to gather the data needed to comprehend how the respondent coped with academic burnout. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data to identify the experiences and coping mechanisms of the respondent. As a result, it was revealed that avoidance coping mechanisms serve as a temporary defensive regulatory strategy for the educator, such as absenteeism and online disconnection from the stressors. However, there is a capacity for the educator to seek administrative support to showcase the resilience drawn from the healthy and supportive connections in the work environment. This study emphasized the significance of effective coping mechanisms for teachers, which would not only improve their job performances but also improve their physical, mental, and emotional state.
