Abstract

This study employed both experimental research method and descriptive research method. The phytochemical screening of the crude methanol leaf extract of Peperomia pellucida (L.) was conducted at the Center for Biomedical Research Department of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute, Dasmariñas City, Cavite. The antioxidant activity determination was performed at the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute - Angelo King Medical Research Center (DLSMHSI-AKMRC) Laboratory Testing Unit. The laboratory procedures was conducted from March 2018-april 2018. After subjecting the initial samples of P. pellucida (L.) to plant identification to the species level, collection, cleaning, air drying, powdering, and maceration using methanol were performed. This was followed by the solvent extraction of methanol from the crude methanol leaf extract of P. pellucida (L.) using a rotary evaporator. The extract was then subjected to a qualitative analysis of its plant secondary metabolites which was performed through various tests to confirm the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, phenols, tannins and glycosides. Another portion of the extract was utilized for the 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay for the determination of the rate of antioxidant activity present in the P. pellucida (L.) extract. For the qualitative analysis of plant secondary metabolites, the present of alakaloids, flavonoids and steroids was confirmed by their corresponding tests. In terms of the rate of antioxidant activity, it was established that there is better antioxidant activity in extracts of higher concentration with lower absorbance from the reagent bank.
