Abstract

Telemedicine has become prevalent since it bridged the gaps in the current healthcare system regarding slow delivery and a lack of workforce, with its usage further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, wherein physical interaction became temporarily out-modeled to decrease the risk of infection between healthcare providers and patients. With telemedicine cemented as an alternative platform to in-person healthcare service delivery, the question of whether the hospitals in the Philippines are ready to integrate a centralized telemedicine system arises. This study assessed the perceived readiness of DLSUMC in integrating a centralized telemedicine system through a quantitative method that utilized a sample size of 140 clinicians of DLSUMC from the total population of 225 DLSUMC clinicians affiliated with the College of Medicine, with a confidence level of 95% and 5% set margin of error. The data collected consists of responses from the study population to a modified questionnaire adapted from a research article titled “Going Digital: A Checklist in Preparing for Hospital-Wide Electronic Medical Record Implementation and Digital Transformation” by Scott et al. (2019), which was conducted online (Google Forms). The perceived readiness of the centralized telemedicine system was then determined through descriptive statistics. Overall, the institution is not yet ready to transition towards a centralized telemedicine system for its hospital clinicians due to specific considerations, including technical issues, inadequate training, cultural factors, and the management of digital disruption. Nonetheless, while clinicians may be unsure with the aforementioned considerations, their neutral stance indicates that they are receptive to the further implementation of telemedicine in their practice, given that the technicalities and challenges that this entails are taken into account.
