Abstract
The Philippine health care system has been described as “fragmented” by the World Health Organization due to its rapid growth in private urban centers while rural populations are left with a shortage of healthcare services available. The promotion of the use of generic medicine as an alternative to branded medicine is one possible aid to fill the gap in healthcare access in the Philippine healthcare system. However, there still remains a strong preference for branded pharmaceuticals among consumers with several factors attributing to this inclination. These factors include biases, brand loyalty, and misconceptions on the quality of generic drugs, with a large portion of the population believing that the cheaper generic drugs are of less quality compared to its branded counterparts. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) Non-Teaching Personnel (NTP) on generic medicine as a treatment option, providing a basis that will help the healthcare system improve medical access without encountering financial barriers– specifically, the intrinsic factors that influence their medicine preference will be determined. The study utilized a cross-sectional design, with a survey questionnaire modified from previous studies. 79 NTPs were evaluated and the participants were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criterias, through proportionate stratified random sampling method, and in line with ethical considerations. The data analysis was performed through measures of frequency, measures of association and inferential statistics. The study determined that the level of knowledge regarding generic medicine was average. In addition, the identified attitude toward generic medicine as a treatment option was mostly positive with minimal negative response. Lastly, the researchers identified that the intrinsic factors such as age, gender, educational attainment, and monthly income are associated with the practice of generic medicine as a treatment choice among DLSMHSI Non-Teaching personnel (NTP).
