Abstract
Lack of healthcare access in rural areas in the Philippines is being addressed by the Department of Health (DOH) through policies and programs such as the Doctors to the Barrio (DTTB) and other public health initiatives, however, the issue remains despite current efforts. Providing assistance to various healthcare organizations improving the DTTB program healthcare policies, this study focused on assessing the consistency of the level of willingness of clinical clerks of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) with the perceived intrinsic and extrinsic factors of serving as Doctors to the Barrio (DTTB). The survey questionnaire for the quantitative phase of this convergent mixed method descriptive study was answered by 114 selected clinical clerks through simple random sampling, with seven (7) of them interviewed for the qualitative phase, upon consenting, after satisfying the inclusion criteria. Based on the Likert scale, the proven reliable data shows that the participants exhibit moderate willingness on all aspects of the Theory of Planned Behavior including Attitude (x̄ = 3.05, s = 0.780), Subjective Norm (x̄ = 3.29, s = 0.730), and Perceived Behavioral Control (x̄ = 3.12, s = 0.790). Overall moderate willingness (x̄ = 3.14, s = 0.706) to become a DTTB is then found influenced by both perceived intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to the program. The study then suggests different measures to increase willingness, while further related studies are suggested to use another data collection method, expanded demographics, and a more extensive scope.
