Abstract

Influenza vaccination is important in the protection of senior citizens (60 years old and above in the Philippines), a population at high risk for complications from the flu. The Knowledge, Awareness, and Perception (KAP) Model was used to determine the association of these factors to the influenza vaccination rate among senior citizens in Barangay San Nicolas II, Dasmarinas, Cavite. There were 45 respondents, 62.22% of whom were vaccinated for influenza. After analysis, it was found that the sociodemographic profile and immunization status had no association. The respondents were found to have a moderate level of knowledge, have a high level of awareness, and have positive perception of the influenza vaccine. The level of knowledge had no association, while both the level of perception and level of awareness was found to have an association with the vaccination rate. This significant association between levels of awareness and perception might be useful in formulating vaccine educational programs that do not entirely focus on dissemination of information and vaccine knowledge for senior citizens. These factors may be beneficial in combating the increasing rates of vaccine hesitancy in the country.
