Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected educational systems worldwide. In order to adapt to this change and reduce the transmission of the virus, many colleges and universities in the Philippines have implemented a remote learning system wherein synchronous and asynchronous classes are held online. These, among other changes in the students’ learning environment may have had an impact on the various factors of their lives. These factors include personal, financial, and academic status. This study aims to determine the perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the decision of graduating students of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and College of Medical Laboratory Sciences (Class of 2022) of DLSMHSI to pursue a Doctor of Medicine in Academic Year 2021-2022. An online survey in the form of a questionnaire was distributed to the Class of 2022 graduating college students from BS Physical Therapy, BS Occupational Therapy, BS Speech & Language Pathology, and BS Medical Laboratory Science. Information on demographics, factors (personal, social, financial, health, and academic), and perceived effect of COVID-19 pandemic that may have influenced the student’s decision to pursue Doctor of Medicine were gathered using an online multiple-choice survey. Purposive quota sampling was used and yielded 95 responses. The results of this study show that for the majority (51.6%) of the respondents, the pandemic has not affected their decision on whether or not to pursue a medical degree. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic was perceived by (20%) of the respondents to have no effect on personal, social, financial, health, and academic factors. Yet, it was discovered that when students perceived that the pandemic had no effect on the aforementioned factors, they were resistant to their decision as to whether they will take doctor of medicine.
