Abstract

This study aimed to explore the factors influencing the decision of DLSMHSI SLP alumni to choose to practice and remain in areas with limited practitioners in the Philippines, as well as the facilitators and barriers for practice that they encounter in their area. Additionally, this study adapted a qualitative descriptive approach, and had 4 participants as respondents. Results yielded eight themes: (1) SLPs prefer supportive environments with strong mentorship, diverse case exposure, and flexible schedules. (2) SLPs in the provinces are motivated by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors (3) SLPs in the provinces are motivated by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors (4) SLPs consider personal, cultural, and community connections as key factors in selecting where to practice (5) SLPs encounter challenges related to the limited number of SLP professionals (6) SLPs encounter barriers affecting the service delivery of SLP services to clients (7) SLPs experience workplace and professional practice challenges that affect clinical responsibilities, and (8) SLPs encounter limited awareness and understanding among families and society regarding SLP services.
