Abstract

This study determined the correlation between friendship quality and academic motivation among 351 first to third year Radiologic Technology students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute during the second semester of A.Y. 2024–2025. Utilizing a correlational research design, data were collected through an adopted, Friendship Quality Scale (FQUA), and a self-made academic motivation questionnaire. Statistical analyses included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results revealed that most respondents were female, first-year students, and aged 17–20. Majority reported high friendship quality, characterized by safety, closeness, acceptance, and help, and high academic motivation. This indicates that respondents experience strong, meaningful friendships attributed to supportive friends, good group dynamics, and a sense of belongingness in the academic environment. Results also show a significant difference in friendship quality when grouped according to sex with females having a higher friendship quality than males. However, there’s no significant difference when grouped according to age and year level. For academic motivation, there is a significant difference when grouped according to age, showing an increase from the first (17 to 20) to the second (21 to 23) age bracket, followed by a decrease in the third (24 and above) age bracket. There was no significant difference when grouped according to year level and sex. There is a moderate positive relationship between friendship quality and academic motivation, implying that while academic motivation increases as friendship quality improves, the 3 relationship between these two variables is only moderately strong.
