Abstract

This research paper was conducted to determine the radiation safety awareness of 227 fourth-year nursing students in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute A.Y. 2023-2024. This study utilized a descriptive research design, which was used to describe results from the 15-item questionnaires adapted from the study of Abadiano, et al. (2018). The statistical treatments used in the study are frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, and t-test. The findings of the study showed that the majority of the respondents were female and were assigned in the private affiliated training hospitals of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute College of Nursing during the conduct of the study. Furthermore, the study also indicated that most of the respondents showed full awareness in terms of basic radiation safety such as time, distance, and shielding. However, with the use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) device, the respondents yielded a result of moderate awareness. This could be attributed to the fact that they have seen the OSL device but have not personally used it. Moreover, findings revealed that there were no significant differences in radiation safety awareness when the respondents were grouped according to sex and type of hospital assignment. The reason for this is that regardless of sex, nursing students have observed and assisted similar procedures based on the clinical practicum guidelines that must be complied. As for the type of hospitals assignment, this could be that private and government hospitals are adhering to the same policies as this is crucial for the licensing of any hospital facility.
