Abstract

This study attempted to determine the relationship of cancer incidence to age and sex. Specifically, It sought to answer the following questions: (1) What are the types of cancer and their incidence in De La Salle University Medical Center and Makati Medical Center? (2) What is the incidence of cancer in the selected hospitals as regards age and sex? (3) Are there significant differences of cancer incidence when patients are grouped according to age and sex? This study utilized the descriptive survey method, in order to describe the relationship of age and sex to cancer incidence in De La Salle University Medical Center and Makati Medical Center. The total population of 346 cancer cases covering the period of January to August, year 1993 in the two selected hospitals were used. Documentary analysis was undertaken to gather data needed to answer each of the specific problems in this study. The following statistical measurements were used in this study: Percentage, and CHI Square Test of Association (1) The percentage was used to determine the following: 2) the types of cancer and their incidence in the two selected hospitals, b) the cancer incidence of respondents according to age group, c) the cancer incidence according to sex. (2) The CHI Square test of association was used to test the significant difference in the cancer incidence when the respondents (cancer victims) were grouped according to age and sex. In the light of the above findings, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) There are numerous types of cancer afflicting a great number of people as reflected in the records of the two selected hospitals, This significant information signals a very depressing condition of the health of people whose cancer risks have not been lessened yet by scientific investigations.(2) Among the three categorized groups, middle-aged adults and the female group are more prone to cancer diseases which could be due to their being more exposed to the elements during work hours & their unhealthy lifestyles.
