Abstract

This study used the descriptive-correlational design. The respondents were 100 teenage mothers aged 13-19 years old in the province of Cavite and selected using purposive sampling. A self-made questionnaire was used to determine the knowledge and practices of teenage mothers regarding maternal and child care. The statistical treatments used were frequency, mean, F-ratio and r-value. The following conclusion were drawn: 1) Majority of the respondents were 18-19 years old, attained high school education, belonged to a nuclear family, single and had a monthly income of P10,000 and below; 2) The knowledge of the respondents on maternal and child care was excellent; 3) The practices of the respondents on maternal and child care were verbally interpreted as practiced to a moderate extent; 4) The knowledge of the respondents on maternal and child care had no significant difference when they were grouped according to age, type of family, educational attainment, civil status and monthly family income; 5) The practices of the respondents on maternal and child care had no significant difference when they were grouped according to age, type of family, educational attainment and monthly family income but there was a significant difference when they were grouped according to civil status; 6) There was a very small positive correlation between knowledge and practices regarding maternal care while there was a moderately small positive correlation between knowledge and practices regarding child care. In general, there was a moderately small positive correlation between knowledge and practices regarding maternal and child care.
