Abstract

This study used the correlational research design. Respondents include 127 3rd year students of the College of Medical Radiation Technology, De La Salle Health Sciences Institute. A two-part questionnaire was used: the first part is to determine the demographic variables; the second part is a 30-item TEI-Questionnaire to measure the emotional intelligence. The data gathered were subjected to statistical treatment such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one-way analysis of variance, independent t-test and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient. The study concluded that, 1) most of the respondents are female, regular students, from a nuclear family and have a month family income of Php30,0001 and above. The most number of respondents are eldest in the family; 2) the respondents have a slightly high emotional intelligence. The different factors revealed that the respondents were slightly high in terms of well-being, emotionality and sociability and average in terms of self-control; 3) the academic performance of the respondents was good; 4) the emotional intelligence of the respondents significantly vary when grouped according to student type with the regular students have slightly higher emotional intelligence but does not significantly vary when grouped according to gender, type of family, position in the family, and monthly family income; 5) the academic performance of the respondents significantly vary when grouped according to gender with females having higher academic performance and student type with the regular students having higher academic performance and student type with the regular students having higher academic performance but does not significantly vary when grouped according to type family, position in the family and monthly family income; 6) the emotional intelligence and academic performance of the respondents have significant relationship. The higher the emotional intelligence of the respondents, the higher the academic performance.
