Abstract

This study determined the level of Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy among Physical Therapy (PT) students in a selected higher education institution in Cavite, specifically describing the demographic profile, main sources of AI knowledge, extent of exposure, and AI literacy across behavioral, cognitive, and AI ethics domains. A descriptive quantitative research design was employed, which served as a baseline for future research. A total of 244 PT students from first to fourth year levels responded through a self-made, expert-validated questionnaire (Cronbach’s α = 0.867; good internal consistency). Results from the data revealed that students primarily acquired AI knowledge through online and digital platforms, and ChatGPT, in particular, is their frequently used AI tool for academic purposes. Overall, respondents demonstrated a high level of AI literacy across behavioral, cognitive, and AI ethics domains–the AI ethics domain obtaining the highest mean and the behavioral domain the lowest. Consistent high levels were observed regardless of demographic profile, sources of knowledge, and extent of exposure. These findings suggest that continuous interaction with digital technologies contributes to the development of AI literacy among students. In conclusion, PT students exhibit a high level of AI literacy; however, the integration of structured AI education within academic curricula is important to ensure that students not only develop AI literacy through exposure but also refine these competencies in a more structured, critical, and professionally relevant manner
