Abstract

Academic burnout among university students has become a major concern in the past couple of years. Research has shown that physical activities and exercise can improve every aspect of an individual’s quality of life including negative states like the reduction of burnout. This systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of aerobic exercise in reducing burnout in university students. A literature search in six databases resulted in the inclusion of two studies. These two RCTs were investigated and analyzed and both exhibited significant improvements post- intervention for some burnout domains. For exhaustion, the only outcome domain explored in both studies, heterogeneity was high with I2 = 79% and p = 0.03. Methodological problems such as issues in the randomization process and measurement of outcomes were also present in the studies. While the existing evidence indicates the reduction of burnout domains, there remains a need for more rigorous studies with higher methodological quality to strengthen the evidence of

efficacy. This systematic review accounts for an exhaustive and wide understanding of the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on the burnout of undergraduate students. Although evidence is found, the number and compatibility of the studies are insufficient. Therefore, future studies should be accomplished to produce high-quality studies and to create a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on academic burnout among undergraduate students.
