Abstract

Eating disorders are increasingly becoming a major issue in our society, a trend that continues to grow due to their widespread impact on people of all ages. This scoping review aims to map out currently available studies regarding the impact of technology in eating disorder management, such as physical therapy and nutrition therapy, to determine any gaps regarding the chosen topic. Physical Therapy has been a preferred approach for managing ED symptoms along with the conventional psychotherapy and pharmacological treatments. PT interventions help reduce or manage ED symptoms and can be helpful to improve their overall health. Results: Following the

first searching, second searching, and snowballing/ancestry methods of data extraction, a total of 23 research were included. Cross-sectional studies were the most common, However, their ability to establish the relationships between the interventions and the ED symptoms was limited. PT interventions were mainly utilized for monitoring general exercise using the patient’s heart rate and energy expenditure. On the other hand, nutrition therapy focused on calorie tracking using applications and WRSM. The review identified several gaps in the literature mainly focusing on technological integration for PT interventions, lacking data on the effects of electronically delivered nutrition therapy, and the need for further research on the relationship of app usage frequency and ED symptoms. In conclusion, further research should be developed to address these gaps and assess the efficacy of incorporating technology in managements for eating disorders.
