Abstract

With the increase in the demand of Filipino physical therapists (PTs) abroad, the study aimed to determine the attributes and marketability of Filipino physical therapists as perceived by selected recruitment agencies as a basis for the implications for developing an evidence-informed academic policy. This study is a qualitative phenomenological research that utilized interpretive phenomenological analysis and hermeneutic approach. The participants of this study are human resource (HR) personnel/directors working closely in the recruitment process of their respective recruitment agencies. A total of four participants that fit the inclusion criteria was interviewed through a Zoom call that lasted for about an hour each. The study utilized three approaches for the analysis: inductive analysis, deductive analysis, and gap analysis. To ensure the validity and credibility of the gathered data, Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness criteria, which included triangulation, peer debriefing, negative case analysis, and member checking, was utilized. From the gathered data, various themes emerged: four for the strengths of Filipino PTs, four for the weaknesses of Filipino PTs, and three for the factors recruitment agencies consider when hiring Filipino PTs. The findings of the study affirmed that many positive attributes of Filipino PTs help increase their marketability and that recruitment agencies consider multiple factors when hiring PTs. The study also revealed some undesirable attributes of Filipino PTs which could be improved through the solutions and suggestions indicated in the study. It is hoped that the study be used as a reference when it comes to evidence-informed academic policy development.
