Abstract

Thirty-five cerebral palsy patients analyzed among 65 case records gathered from Elk's Cerebral Palsy Center. The subjects chosen were those patients initially evaluated and discharged from January 1, 1975 to December 31, 1990, those patients who were non-ambulant before treatment and became ambulant after treatment and those patients who non-ambulant before treatment but remained non-ambulant after treatment. Information based on the type of Cerebral Palsy, patient's age upon initial evaluation and upon discharge, onset/status of sitting, and type of therapy given. The general objective of this study was to determine the effectivity of the Molnar prognostic index to the Filipino Cerebral Palsy patients. From the study conducted, it figured that there is compatibility of the Molnar prognostic index in terms of the type of cerebral palsy. The 85 % patients who were able to ambulate belongs to the spastic group, specifically the spastic hemiplegia, and of those who were unable to ambulate, majority belongs to the flaccid type. In terms of the onset of the sitting, 78% of those who were able to ambulate is compatible to the Molnar prognostic index. Meaning that 78% were able to sit before the age of two, in which, according to Molnar is the second basis for prognosis in ambulation that the patient must be able to sit before the age of two. However, regards to the non-ambulant cerebral palsy patients, although 50% were able to sit by the age of two they were still unable to walk, which is incompatible to the index. Likewise, the applicability of the presence or absence of the reflexes could not evaluated because the researchers failed to assess the reflexes against the type of cerebral palsy and the onset of the sitting. No definite conclusions however, could made between the other types of cerebral palsy, the sitting ability and reflex status because of the absence of a comparison group and small sample size. It is highly recommended that an extensive study conducted with a larger sampling size and a lager comparison group with a larger sampling size and a larger comparison group to come up with a more conclusive study.
