Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to determine the methods members of DLSU-EAC, in treating ankle sprain immediately after an injury. Data obtained through a questionnaire with 109 random respondents from students, faculty, and staff of DLSU-EAC. The results of the study showed the following, (1) 80.6% (88) were female respondents. Out of the 109 subjects, 69.7% (76) belong to the 17 to 20-year bracket. (2) The massage was 81.6% (89) found to be the most common immediate treatment resorted by members of DLSU-EAC in treating acute ankle sprain. (3) Besides, the standard treatment regimen prescribed for ankle sprain and its importance not so much recognized by the respondents. The latter supported by the results of Table 1, show the respondents' preference for methods as follows, (a) rest, 20.2% (22), (b) ice application, 14.7% (16), bandaging, 23.8% (26), (d) elevation, 18.3%, (20). Therefore, since only a few respondents utilized or recognized the importance of the standard treatment program for an ankle sprain, the researchers felt the need for intensive education and dissemination of information on the prevention and proper management of ankle sprain, and thus, recommended implementation of such program. This program included the basic facts about sprain, made simple enough so that the program implemented even in elementary schools. More advanced education continued in high school and college levels. Because of the youth involvement in sports and fitness activities, bring about an expected proportional increase in sports-related injuries. Likewise, the authors recommend further studies similar or related to this, but with certain criteria set to make the study more detailed.
