Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the most common musculoskeletal complaints of pregnant women in three health centers in the Dasmariñas Resettlement Area: San Juan, San Simon, and San Roque. The result of this study would serve as a piece of information for pregnant mothers, Physical Therapist and other Rehabilitation Team members about the role of Physical Therapy in the care of obstetric patients. Included in this study were 57 pregnant mothers who met the criteria. There were 40 pregnant mothers on their second trimester, while 17 on their last trimester. Researchers developed an interview guide to determine the problems encountered during pregnancy. Researchers analyzed the results using standard tables. Ranked the musculoskeletal problems according to frequency, percentage, and identified the most problem among the rest. The results showed the number one musculoskeletal complaint of pregnant women on their second and third trimester were cramps, followed by low back pain and pelvic floor pain. Edema of both feet ranked fourth followed by pain and swelling of the hands and knees. The identified musculoskeletal problems by physical therapists proved to have many aides to offer. Providing postural reeducation, easing musculoskeletal discomforts, teaching stress management, proper body mechanics, prescribed exercises and the use of some supportive materials. Rehabilitation Medicine professionals involved in the care of these patients, and other helpful aides such as information dissemination, health education classes, and leaflets given to pregnant mothers like maternal childcare and measures on how to relieve musculoskeletal problems related to pregnancy.
