Abstract
In a typical rehabilitation setting in both government and private hospitals, physical therapy interns are the ones who implement physical therapy treatments. Private patients who pay for their PT treatments are supposed to be handled by a private PT, but instead are given to PT interns. Due to this situation the author are triggered to conduct a study to determine the reactions and attitudes of private patients to treatment by PT interns. The study included 25 respondents from 3 private pay hospitals who were handled by PT interns of De La Salle University- College of PT. Questionnaire method is used as a form of survey instrument. After the implementation, gathered data showed that, as to the treatment by PT intern the general trend tends to show a positive reaction to handling by PT interns, but there appears to be some conflict. Based on the data 20 (80%0 of the respondents have completed trust on their PT interns but only 11 (44%) revealed personal issue to their PT interns that is relevant to their condition. Regarding confidence 21 (84%) of the respondents have full confident that their PT interns will not commit mistakes and 16 (64%) depends on the ability of their PT interns to satisfactorily answer their questions. Data also reflect a high of 23 (92%) respondents are relaxed during treatment but 14 (56%) are on the lookout for mistakes that a PT interns may commit. Regarding opinions on the competency of interns in general, about 50% of the respondents feel that a licensed PT is not necessarily more competent than a PT intern. Furthermore, 20 (80%) of the respondents feel that interns should not be limited to charity patients but only 12 (48%) agreed to allow the undergraduate therapist to handle private patients.
