Abstract
After the acute stage of thermal burn, an intensive preventive care program must be carried out to avoid disabling and disfiguring sequelae. Previous study found out that thermal burn patients have limited knowledge on preventive care program. This was the reason why the authors conducted a study aimed at developing a manual for thermal burn patients and tested its affectivity in increasing the knowledge of thermal burn patients on preventive care of hypertrophic scars, joint and soft-tissue contractures and further skin injuries. The researchers used the descriptive design using survey technique. Data were obtained through a questionnaire distributed to 24 respondents are moderate thermal burn patients admitted at the Burn Unit of Philippine General Hospital from the period of September to December 1994 or to their relatives. The survey instrument used pre-test and post-test questionnaires was translated into Tagalog. Results were subjected to a t-test. Data were gathered and interpreted using frequency percentage and mean. Based on the results, the manual was proven effective in increasing the knowledge of thermal burn patients on preventive care program. However, the manual still has to be improved. Knowledge obtained by the respondents from the manual itself was not sufficient thus verbal instructions on extensive preventive care program was needed. Recommendation include improving the manual using the same format but with in depth discussions and more illustrations and to have it thoroughly is to give the manual to the patients but with supporting verbal instructions on the most important aspects of preventive care.
